Pop icon Mariah Carey and her longtime boyfriend, dancer Bryan Tanaka, have reportedly called it quits after seven years of dating, according to multiple sources.
The couple, who had known each other professionally since 2006 when Tanaka was a backup dancer on Carey’s Adventures of Mimi tour, went public with their romance in late 2016 shortly after Carey broke off her engagement to billionaire James Packer.
“He wants to have a family. That’s not where she is at,” a source told Page Six about the reason behind the split. Carey shares 12-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe with ex-husband Nick Cannon, while Tanaka does not have any children.
“He wants to start having his own life,” another source said of Tanaka’s desire to move on.
Speculation about the breakup intensified in recent weeks when Tanaka was noticeably absent from Carey’s annual Christmas tour and holiday trip to Aspen, two traditions he had previously attended with Carey.
The last time the couple was spotted publicly was back in March, when Tanaka shared a loving Instagram post for Carey’s birthday, referring to it as their “anniversary.”
While neither Carey nor Tanaka have officially confirmed the breakup, sources say they ended things amicably after having “a good run” together and plan to remain friends.
Carey had been married to music executive Tommy Mottola from 1993-1998 before her high-profile marriage to Nick Cannon from 2008-2016.
As the legendary singer heads into the holidays newly single once again, she is said to be focusing her energy on finalizing her new album and spending time with her twins.
